  • Abstract:
  • Some times vibrations in structures and machine components lead to cyclic stresses resulting in material fatigue and failure. The transmission of vibrations to human beings results in discomfort. Source of vibrations in ships are mainly due to main machinery, propeller and auxiliary machinery like condensers, compressors, motors, pumps, generators and other machinery. These vibrations are transmitted into water through the hull of the vessel to the surrounding water, which becomes a source of detection by other ships. Hence the main objective is to reduce the structure borne noise of the given structure In ships all engines will be placed on hull and one cannot place these engines directly on it, so it needs foundation. There are number of foundations present on hull of the ship and those are made up of isotropic materials in many cases. Types of foundations include diesel engine foundation, compressor engine foundation, etc. The source, like engines or compressors, which are placed on these foundations, will generate a lot of vibration and which is transferred to hull of ship and to surrounding equipment and personnel.
